The Trails of Lower Hillsborough Wilderness Area

The best way to explore natural Florida is by trail, and the Lower Hillsborough Wilderness area provides miles and miles of nature exploring. Located in Thonotosassa, this outdoor playland is the largest natural preserved recreation area in Hillsborough County, and whether you are a hiker, biker, or canoer/kayaker, a trail awaits.

The Lower Hillsborough Wilderness area consists of several parks that border each other and are connected by trails, making for miles and miles of hiking, biking, and canoeing/kayaking.

On our visit, John and I began our hiking adventure through the parking area at Morris Bridge Park located at 13630 Morris Bridge Road in Thonotosassa. Morris Bridge Park is 106 acres and is best known for its great river fishing. The parking fee is $2.00, and the cost for the use of the canoe/kayak launch is $7.00

Other parks in the Lower Hillsborough Wilderness area

  • Dead River Park – 15098 Dead River Road, Thonotosassa –  a scenic two-mile trail alongside the Hillsborough River.
  • FlatWoods Park – 14302 Morris Bridge Road, Thonotodassa – Best Known for its 7 mile paved multi use trail
  • John B. Sargeant Park – 12702 US 301, Thonotosassa – Best known for boating river access
  • Trout Creek Park – 12550 Morris Bridge Road, Thonotosassa – Located at the mouth of Trout Creek
  • Wilderness Park off Road Trail System -12573 Morris Bridge Road, Thonotosassa – 20-mile main trail and 15 miles of side trails traverse Morris Bridge Park, Trout Creek and “Flatwoods area.

The Lower Hillsborough Wilderness area is a beautiful natural Florida area filled with opportunities for outdoor adventures. Once you are on the trails, civilization seems to disappear, and you will find yourself immersed in a wonderland of nature’s beauty.
