Exploring Crews Lake Wilderness Park, Home of The Central Pasco & Gulf Railroad

John and I had a wonderful and easy 3-mile hike at Lake Wilderness Park in Spring Hill, Florida. It is springtime in Florida, and the temperatures are already getting up in the high 80s; and when the temperatures rise, John and I look for hikes with lots of shade.

The landscape is very scenic, and spring has brought with it spectacular azalea and wildflower blooms throughout the park.

Birdsong can be heard throughout all the trails, but perhaps the loudest song is that of the sandhill cranes that frequent the edge of Crews Lake. In fact, many species of wading birds can be found around the lake, and the trails provide an excellent opportunity for birding.

The picnic facilities are spacious and very well equipped, and what a beautiful setting for a family picnic.

There are at least 3 miles of trails; however, hiking is not the only available outdoor activity opportunity available at the park. Crews Lake provides an excellent chance of hooking a Large Mouth Bass from either the pier or kayak/canoe. A kayak/canoe launch is provided.

The kids will love the playground area, while mom, dad, or even grandparents will love the scenic and shady spots to sit back, relax and take in the view.

The primitive campground at Crews Lake Park is very shaded and convenient to the trails and playground area. Each campsite is provided with a picnic table and fire pit. An outdoor shower is provided within the campground area. Outdoors meaning that the showers are not within a building but enclosed within a wooden fence to provide privacy. A unique feature that visitors can enjoy the 2nd Saturday of every month is the Central Pasco & Gulf Railroad, which offers free rides on their scaled-down train. The railroad is modeled after the Orange Belt Railway that ran through the area in the late 1800s. Hours of operation are from 10 am to 3 pm on the 2nd Saturday every month.

Crews Lake Wilderness Park is open 7 days a week from dawn until dusk and is located at 6739 Crews Lake Drive Spring Hill, FL 34610.
