I know it sounds a bit cliche, but John and I found that Lake Mirror Park really does have something for the entire family. And the best part? It is all absolutely free, making it a great value family fun day. Pack a picnic lunch and make a day of it while you and your family enjoy all three areas of the park.
Barnett Family Park
Within Lake Mirror Park is the Barnett Family Park, a perfect place for the little ones to let loose and have some playground fun. There are different playgrounds for different age groups to ensure that all the little ones can have a great time. If your little ones get too warm having all that playground fun, well, no problem, the splash park is there, ready to cool them off.
Parents, I can’t tell you how long to plan to be in the playground area. I can tell you that seeing this playground made me want to be a kid again. In fact, if there weren’t people around, I might have taken a whirl on the nifty swings myself. My only advice to you is to pack a lunch and bring water. There are plenty of spots in the shade for you moms and dads to sit and relax nearby. So maybe bring a book and plan to stay awhile.
Hollis Gardens & the Rose Gardens
Within Lake Mirror Park is a fabulous and breathtaking rose garden with rose bushes standing over 5 feet tall. The vibrant colors and the aroma of the blooms are pleasing to the senses of sight and smell.
I love gardens, and although I love all flowers, Roses are my favorite flower. I spent about 45 minutes within the gardens and probably could have spent more if time allowed. If you enjoy being amongst the flowers, you will be like me and spend a good deal of time there. If flowers aren’t your thing, then allow about 20 minutes.
Enjoy a pleasant walk around Lake Mirror, where walkers will see many different types of birds, geese, ducks, and even swans.
It took John and I a little over an hour to walk around the lake. Of course, we stopped, took a ton of pictures, and enjoyed the views along the way. Plan for at least an hour to leisurely walk and fully enjoy all the birds and views.
Lake Morton’s Swans
Take the 3-minute drive from Lake Mirror Park to Lake Morton and park along the road in the marked parking spaces. Take the lakeside stroll and be amazed by the many gorgeous white and black swans and other waterfowl that can be seen frolicking around the lake. It is truly a sight to be seen.
Lake Mirror Park is conveniently located right in the middle of Downtown Lakeland at 702 East Orange Street.
Hours for Hollis Gardens are: Sunday – Thursday from 10 am to 6 pm, Friday & Saturday from 10 am – 4 pm. Closed on Mondays.
Barnet Family Park hours are Monday – Friday from 10 AM to dusk. Saturday & Sunday from 8 AM to dusk. Additional parking is available at the north end of the park at 121 South Lake Avenue. Picnic tables are first-come, first-serve. Bring plenty of water to stay hydrated as water fountains are currently closed due to Covid 19.
