The building at the University of Central Florida known as the Ying Academic Center was once The Carey Hand Funeral Home.
During the first half of the twentieth century, the Carey Hand Funeral Home was the largest in Central Florida, serving a five-county area, including Orange, Seminole, Osceola, Polk, and Hillsborough. It was the first funeral home in Florida to have a chapel and housed the first crematorium built south of Cincinnati and Washington, DC, serving most of the southeastern states.
The building was used as a mortuary until 1992, and it is often a featured stop on haunted tours of downtown Orlando.
Over the years, employees that have worked in the building have reported hearing mysterious voices and sounds, while others have claimed a feeling of unease when they entered the building.
There is one claim from a woman who said she was mysteriously locked in a storage room with a presence of unknown origin. Co-workers heard her screams and came to her rescue, but when they got there, they were puzzled to find that the door was unlocked.
