John and I had quite the day exploring Lake Louisa State Park in Clermont, Florida. To give you a better idea of where Clermont, Florida is, going north on Highway 27, it’s about 25 miles north of Disney World.
A theme park for the nature lover, Lake Louisa State Park has an abundance of outdoor activities for visitors to enjoy within its 4500 acres. Camping, fishing, biking, hiking, kayaking, canoeing, horseback riding, picnicking, and wildlife viewing are all popular activities in the park. A kayak/canoe launch is provided; however, Note to motor boaters – there is no boat ramp within lake Louisa State Park.
Lake Louisa State Park has 20 spacious cabins with an outstanding lake view, and the RV campground also has amazing lake views and is equipped with many amenities. My first thought was that this would be a fabulous place to camp for anyone who may be planning a Disney trip. (after hours gate code would have to be obtained from a park ranger for campers returning back to their campsite after normal State Park hours). If you are lucky enough to secure a reservation, State Parks offer a great value to the budget-conscious when it comes to lodging.
Equestrian camping is also available, and paddocks can be reserved. Each paddock has a picnic table and a fire ring.
There are actually five lakes within Lake Louisa State Park, Lake Louisa, Bear Lake, Dixie Lake, Hammond Lake, and Smokehouse Lake, making this state park a perfect place for fishing and paddling enthusiasts.
There are 20 miles of unpaved multi-use trails in the park for mountain biking, hiking, and nature observation. Equestrian usage is allowed on 15 miles of that trail system. John and I hiked about 4 miles of trails on our visit, and though we didn’t see a bobcat, we did see tracks and droppings. Maybe next time because we are definitely going back with the entire family for a weekend family adventure.
Guided Kayak Tours and Horseback Tours are also available and what is great about these tours is that they provide instruction, so if you have never kayaked or been on a horse before, no worries, the tours are geared to help you learn and enjoy.
Visitors can bring their own canoes, kayaks, and other small boats as long as they can be hand-carried to the water. Gas motors are not permitted, but electric trolling motors are.
Bicycles, kayaks, canoes and stand up paddleboards are available for rent at the camp canteen.
Pets are welcome in the park but must be kept leashed.
Lake Louisa State Park is located at 7305 U.S. Hwy 27 Clermont FL 34714. Hours are 8 am to sundown, 365 days a year. The entrance fee is $5 per vehicle.
