Florida is so much more than theme parks and beaches and we here at The View From Florida like to find those Down The Road Places that are not plastered all over the travel brochures. Those off the radar hidden jewels that are interesting, fun and even sometimes quirky.
In this addition of Down The Road Florida we found two such places in Yalaha, Florida. I know, your first question is where the heck is Yalaha? Well, Yalaha is in the middle of the state in Lake County, situated 41 miles north, northwest of Orlando and 85 miles north, north east of Tampa and if you blink going down Florida County Road 48, you just might miss it.
Yalaha is the Seminole Indian word for yellow orange and it was a word shouted out when the town’s founder gave an Indian a very tasty and ripe orange from one of his orange trees back in the mid 1800’s. From then on as the story goes, is how the town got it’s name.
Coming from the west coast of Florida and driving down County Road 48, a back country road through limestone mines, farmland and thick trees, you will come upon Yalaha and you will know you are there because something different appears. A building looking very much out of place on this back country road.
I am not sure how a German bakery, deli and biergarten ended up here, (that may be a story for another post) but it certainly stands out in the middle of farmland and trees. Yalaha Bakery, draws a crowd too and makes you wonder how all these people found this place and because it does get rather busy there, if you decide to check it out, you should expect a longer wait time than an average deli/bakery. The wait time is well worth it as the food and bakery items are out of this world delicious.
The biergarten is only open on the weekends and it’s on the weekends when the place really gets hopping with live music and of course German Beer. It’s authentic German food and beer on tap, Down the Road in Florida. Located at 8210 County Road 48 Yalaha, Florida.
Yalaha Bootlegging Co. & Blue Bayou Farm
The town of Yalaha is the perfect setting for Yalaha Bootlegging Company because what back country road doesn’t make you think of moonshine!!
This place located next door to Yalaha Bakery, is just a really cool down the road place to check out. Blueberry, cranberry, applesmack, peach, watermelon and aged southern pecan, moonshines all for the tasting. There are homemade pies, breads, jams, handmade goods, Amish cheese & butter, local produce, local honey, pickles, Cedar Key Clams, and more!!
On Blue Bayou Farm located at the distillery, they grow their own organic blueberries.
Yalaha Bootlegging Company is located at 8222 County Road 48 and is open from 10 am – 5 pm daily
