The official slogan to Lovers key is “Where outdoor adventures are endless” and it is a very fitting slogan. The park is over 1600 acres and is made up of actually 4 barrier islands on the Gulf of Mexico, Lovers Key, Inner Key, Black Island and Long Key.
There is 2.5 miles of beach to enjoy swimming, sunbathing and shelling. We took the free tram to the south beach where there are concessions and restroom facilities. The south beach is a very popular destination for weddings as well, as the name of the park might suggest. There is a wedding gazebo there and staff that sets it all up so if you are thinking of a destination wedding on the beach then you might want to check this out.
There is 4.5 miles of hiking and biking trails that follow the inner waterways on the island. Through the mangroves and trees is the opportunity to see Florida wildlife in their natural habitat. Bike rentals are available at the main beach parking area. Canoe rentals are also available and there are many waterways fed by the Gulf of Mexico where you have the chance to see manatees, alligators, and turtles.
The south beach is where John and I set up for the day and it was not overcrowded which John and I really enjoyed. We rented two beach loungers and and umbrella at a cost of 30 dollars for the day and we sat back and just relaxed. Important note: if paying for any rental by credit card do so at the main parking facility before you take the tram as they can only take cash at the beach side concession area.
A nice touch was the music being played by a musician set up at the gazebo who was playing relaxing beach songs mixed in with some comical drinking tunes. It was a laid back beach party atmosphere but still appropriate for families as no adult beverages are allowed on the beach. A concession area with tables and chairs is also at the south beach serving hot dogs, sandwiches, hamburgers, drinks and ice cream. You can also rent paddle boards and kayaks at this concession. Note: There are many areas throughout the park with picnic facilities and grills but they are not on the beach.
There is also a fishing pier at Lovers Key State Park and you can buy bait and fishing supplies at the main parking concession area. A Florida saltwater fishing license is required to fish the waterways of the park.
Lovers Key State Park is located 10.5 miles west of Interstate 75 exit 116 county road 865. The park address is 8700 Estero Blvd Fort Myers beach, Fl. The entrance is between New Pass and Big Carlos Pass.
