Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park – Quality Family Time
When my kids were little my late husband and I would never tell them ahead of time when we were going to Disney. We would just tell them to get up and get dressed because we had lots of errands to run. About an hour into the drive the kids would start to wonder about just where the heck these errands we had to run were and they would start asking questions. About a half hour after the questions, on interstate 4, they would see the big metal pole that holds up the power lines with the Mickey ears on top of it. As we pulled off at that exit the back seat of the car would erupt in to screams of excitement and joy. It never got old for us or them.
Now the kids are grown into men and my oldest has two of his own children with a 3rd on the way and our families’ love for Disney has grown too. Now I get to experience the joy of Disney through a child’s eyes all over again and my sons get to understand just how much that child’s joy brought happiness to myself and their dad. My husband passed 10 years ago and some of the best memories my sons have of him are those family surprise trips to Disney. Life is about making memories because at the end of our journey it is the memories that we leave behind.
Now we are making memories with John, who we made part of our family a few years ago and the grand kids and the newest memory we made was yesterday at Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park.
We live about an hour and a half to two hours away, depending on traffic on I 4, from The Walt Disney World Resort area. Sometimes we stay on property for a few days but sometimes we will just go for the day. Since this time we were just going for the day and not spending any money on a resort, we decided to splurge a little and we booked a cabana at Blizzard Beach. A cabana rental is not inexpensive as it will set you back somewhere around $325 but when the sun is scorching and it is 97 degrees out, it’s a treat you might want to consider.
The cabana comes with a souvenir mug for each guest with free soda refills all day, it is stocked with an ice chest full of water, and plenty of towels for your use. The cabana also has a locker to store your valuables, comfortable chairs and your own personal attendant. No lines to stand in for lunch or to order an adult beverage as all you have to do is text your attendant your order off the menu they leave you and in true Disney style your order magically appears in minutes. It also gives you a place to get in out of the sun for a bit, My kids and grand kids really feel like royalty when we get the cabana and it just adds a special feel to the day.
If you don’t have it in your budget to get the cabana, no worries as Disney did a good job providing lots of shady spots within the water park to get their guests out of the hot Florida sun.
John and I spent a good part of the day on an raft in Cross Country Creek as we were not up to the challenge of the water slides. We did however venture in to Melt Away Bay wave pool. The kids and grand kids did join us often as they enjoyed both of these two attractions as well, especially the relaxation of Cross Country Creek.
There are plentiful water slides for all. For the thrill seekers there is Summit Plummet where a chairlift will take you atop Mount Gushmore, one of the tallest and fastest free fall body slides in the world. My family loves Teamboat Springs , the group raft ride that holds up to six people. Even my 4 year old grandson can ride this one and he loves being able to ride with his dad and uncle.
The children’s area is fantastic at Blizzard Beach as they provide a good many slides for the younger ones. My four year old Grandson really didn’t even notice that there were slides he couldn’t ride because he was so entertained with all the slides and water play available to him.
For lunch we ordered turkey sandwiches, pizza and my grandson had to have a hot dog and the grown ups had some tasty and tropical adult beverages. Snacks and food are plentiful around the park and even on a hot summer weekend the lines were not long at all.
Showers complete with soap and changing rooms are provided so if you don’t want to drive back to your hotel or next destination with your body full of sunscreen you can shower and change clothes. Speaking of sunscreen, if you make a mistake and forget to bring it you can purchase some at the gift shop at the front entrance.
We had a great family day playing in the water. My grand kids will have another great memory of splashing and dunking their uncle, riding on the raft with their dad and relaxing on Cross Country Creek with Nana, John and their mom (who is pregnant and couldn’t do the water slides). It is all about the memories and quality family time.
